Department of

Information Systems & Operations Management

Bachelor of Science in Information Management Systems

About/History

King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals (KFUPM) was founded in 1963, initially under the name College of Petroleum and Minerals. Over the last six decades, KFUPM has undergone substantial institutional growth, strategically positioning itself to address the Kingdom’s scientific and technological challenges as it advances into the future.

The College of Industrial Management (CIM) was established in 1975, initially offering two degrees: a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Industrial Management with concentrations in, Accounting, Finance, Information Systems, Management, and Marketing and a Master of Business Administration (MBA). From its inception, CIM was structured around two main academic units: the undergraduate program and the MBA program.

By 1990, the undergraduate program was reorganized into five B.Sc. degree programs offered by three academic departments:

  • Department of Accounting and Management Information Systems (MIS)
  • Department of Finance and Economics
  • Department of Management and Marketing

In 2020, KBS completed its second major restructuring, finalized its rebranding efforts, changed the name from College of Industrial Management (CIM) to the KFUPM Business School, and introduced its new vision and mission. The five B.Sc. programs remained unchanged, but two departments were restructured to maximize opportunities for synergy. Thus, Accounting, Finance, and Economics were brought under a new department called the Accounting and Finance (ACFN), and the Management Information Systems and Operations Management were brought under a new department called the Information Systems and Operations Management (ISOM). The Management and Marketing (MGTMKT) department remained the same.

The ISOM department’s curriculum is thoughtfully designed to equip students to lead and innovate in the global economy, emphasizing crucial skills such as technological proficiency and strategic thinking. The program offers extensive exposure to cutting-edge fields like artificial intelligence, digital transformation, and leadership. Over the last five years, ISOM expanded its curriculum to include both fundamental and advanced courses, ensuring that graduates are well-prepared to meet contemporary business challenges effectively. In addition to the B.Sc. in MIS program, ISOM started offering a professional master’s degree program in Supply Chain Management and in Business Analytics in 2021 and 2022 respectively. The department also offers concentrations in Business Analytics and Supply Chain Management for all the undergraduate degree programs offered by KBS.
